My Art Journey
Annette Barker
I paint many large landscapes to give the feeling of being in the country side.
My large contemporary/abstract paintings are usually an impression of seascapes.
I like to paint and draw portraits and figures from life.

For about 3 years while working full time, I attended the School of Art Evening Classes, the tutor was Mike Taylor, who has art in the Australian National Gallery.

I painted and exhibited outdoor scenes with plein-air painters 'The Wednesday Group' for many years, commencing when I resigned from work to start a family. I enjoyed the company of the other artists in the group and the atmosphere in the Australian bush. I learned to paint from nature, and I also attended art workshops from top interstate artists, starting with two workshops with Reg Campbell from Bathurst, Colin Parker, Joshua Smith, portrait and still-life (he was the subject of Dobell's well-known portrait) and many others.

I was elected as Hon Secretary for the Artists Society of Canberra Inc. in May 1984 and again in 1985, a busy time when my four children were very young, the oldest was 7. (I was told that the Annual Ex. in 1985 was the first to make a profit.) - then elected to their Exhibition Committee many times.

For many years I was a member of the Canberra Art Workshop where I directly painted portraits, flowers and still life.

I voluntarily taught pensioners to paint – one morning a month at the 'Drop-in Centre' Cooleman Court – then one day a week at the Seniors Centre, Turner.
I then taught an evening art class at Philip College for a couple of years.

At ASOC's Summer Art Experience I was a volunteer helper for a few years about 2003. After that I attended a number of SAE art courses.

I exhibited in my daughter Kylie Heslop's 'Art Gone Wild' gallery which was in Bungendore NSW. She is a talented airbrush artist who paints traditional and custom art, winning airbrush art trophies at Summernats (car event) for three years in a row. She gave an airbrush demonstration at ASOC, about 40 members attended.

At the Queanbeyan Art Society, NSW, I teach water-media to a friendly art group.
Thursday's, 10.30-2pm (started many years ago). In a pioneer house (QAS art gallery) by the river, next to the cafe. (Gallery 02 62978181.)

In 2017 I was one of the four guest artists at the QAS 10 Annual Charity Art Show, City Walk, Canberra, ACT. (Near the Merry-go-Round.) This year's charity was Motor Neurone Disease. Guest artists donated a painting each for the raffle to help the charity.

It's very nice when some of my grandchildren are keen to show me their artwork.

I've exhibited in many local art shows for charities and schools, winning awards using various subject and mediums. I've had paintings in Aarwun gallery. I was among artists invited to exhibit at the Gininderra old school house gallery. I had also exhibited in the former 'Art Gone Wild' gallery in Bungendore, NSW.

Oil, 3 'Greeting the Molonglo Sunrise'.
Well handled colour capturing the moment when
the world really does appear to be an abstract

all physical definition. Well done.
